Jimmy Carter Recovering From Brain Procedure - WebMD

Nov. 12, 2019 -- Former President Jimmy Carter is at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, where he is recovering from surgery to relieve pressure on his brain from a subdural hematoma, according to a statement from the Carter Center. He is resting comfortably and is with his wife, Rosalynn.

The Carter Center previously said the pressure was caused by bleeding due to his recent falls.

“There are no complications from the surgery,” the center said in a statement Tuesday. “President Carter will remain in the hospital as long as advisable for observation.”

A subdural hematoma is a buildup of blood outside the brain but inside the skull. It increases pressure on the brain and can be life-threatening. It can occur when an injury to the head causes blood vessels in the brain to tear and bleed.

Carter, 95, fell two times last month. In late October, he fell at his home in Plains, GA, and fractured his pelvis. Earlier that month, he needed 14 stitches above his eye after hitting his head at home.

The 39th president was treated for liver cancer and melanoma that had spread to his brain in 2015.
